When considering buying a wood stove, there are a lot of reflexions you should do in advance. Below, we will answer some of the most common questions that are relevant before purchasing a new wood stove.
If you have any further questions, you are of course always very welcome to contact your local HETA dealer.
Is the stove going to be your primary source of heating or only a supplement to your current heat source, primarily in order to simply enjoy the flames? The answer is crucial to your choice of wood stove.
The power of stoves is measured as a kW value. kW is an expression of the amount of heat that the stove emits. A rule of thumb says that 1 kW can heat a room of 10-20 square meters with normal ceiling height depending on the insulation of the house. The value “kW when tested” tells you about the power that the stove is approved for in the standardised EN test.
Be careful not to buy a stove that is too large, as this can lead to fires with too little air supply, which will result in a non-optimal combustion.
Most new stoves are made according to the convection principle, where air circulates between an inner and an outer steel jacket. When the air is heated, it rises into the air and heats the room. A convection stove provides even heat and can be placed closer to combustible materials than a radiant stove. The radiant heat provides a more intense heat, and can be suitable for smaller rooms. Therefore, you need to carefully consider where your wood stove will be placed.
Both sheet iron and cast iron are excellent materials for making stoves and fireplace inserts. All HETA’s products include both plate steel and cast iron. The allocation is decided according to durability and design.
HETA’s stoves are made of steel and cast iron. In addition to these, you have the option to line your stove with steel tiles, ceramics, soapstone, limestone, granite and sandstone in several variants. Your choice is a matter of style and design, but it also depends on some factual differences. A stove made solely of steel or cast iron heats up faster than a stove with tiles or soapstone. On the other hand, it also cools down more quickly, once the fire has gone out.
Tiles and especially soapstone take a little longer to heat up, but in return, they keep warm long after the fire has gone out. The slightly larger soapstone stoves can keep you warm for many hours and can easily keep the living room or the rest of the house nice and warm all night, so you will not wake up cold in the morning.
For the sake of your wallet and the environment, consider how your stove burns the wood. The HETA stoves’ completely unique dimensioning of the combustion chamber and associated airways means that CO2 and harmful particles are reduced to an absolute minimum. HETA’s modern combustion technology Clean Burn is extremely efficient and removes soot particles on the glass door and through flues. When you light the stove, a healthy and pleasant radiant heat immediately arises through the large glass panes, and shortly after, the convection system begins to distribute the warmth and cosiness in the room and the adjoining areas.
To avoid fire and personal injury, make sure that the stove is on a non-flammable surface, such as a glass plate. The plate must cover a minimum of 30 cm in front of the stove and 15 cm to each side. A wood stove that is placed against a brick wall or other non-combustible walls, in principle does not need distance to the wall, but 5-10 cm is recommended because it provides the best utilisation of the convection air and makes it easier to clean and service the stove.
Avoid having furniture too close to the stove. You can read on the stove’s nameplate what the safety distance is. You should also be aware that a wood stove can emit so much heat that it can be uncomfortable to sit too close to it.
A wood stove must be placed on a non-flammable surface. This could, for example, be a glass plate.
A wood stove plate in tempered glass is very suitable as it protects your floor from ash and burn marks, while at the same time giving a nice finish. You will find different shapes and sizes in HETA’s range.
You can also get stove plates in steel and slate, which are non-flammable as well.
The size of the plate depends on the size of the stove. The plate under your stove must cover the floor 30 cm in front of the stove and 15 cm to each side.
All plates are available in several different standard dimensions. At HETA, we have both universal plates and plates made for Scan-Line 8, Scan-Line 500, Scan-Line 800 and Scan-Line 1000.
